Warper Party July, 1st

June 30, 2009

Tomorrow night I will be playing visuals with my all new Ohm64 at Warper Party in NYC. I, being Jay Smith (pretty sweet VJ name huh?) will be using the Ohm64 with DNA and Union to mix visuals from 10-11PM. I may also be doing some A/V with DNA and Ableton Live to show off the Ohm64 is time allows. If you want to check out the Ohm64, buy me a beer, or just chat, feel free to drop me a line to let me know you are going to be there.

Warper Party is free unsponsored event and open to the public. There will be a handful of great artists, musicians, and visualists performing all night, so if you are in the NY area there is no reason to not stop by.

Life is too Short for Keyframes

June 29, 2009

I got an email today through our myspace from VJ 999999999 out of Portugal. Yeah it has been a long time since we updated our myspace, we seem to be updating more on facebook and twitter like the rest of the “kids” out there, but I am glad we did because vision9time has some great videos he made using Union. I recognize some of the effects glass, resize, and some of Pete Warden’s Free Frame effects. This is a great example of using Union’s record function and creating a great mix in real-time. Imagine how long this would have taken if After Effects was used?

Ohm64 Player Piano

June 26, 2009
Tags: , , ,

So this morning I was searching for a software that turns audio tracks into MIDI notes and I came across a little program called WIDI Audio to MIDI. What I wanted to do was take a track and turn the Ohm64 into a “player piano” so the LED’s would blink when a note was playing. I did a quick look into my itunes library and took a Coltrane track (I almost chose “Total Soul Future” from Beck, but I needed more piano). After opening the track in WIDI, I connected my Ohm64 and here is the result.

Pointless? Perhaps, but still pretty cool. I actually have it playing at my desk all day with John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” and it does add to the free jazz philosophy of Coltrane.

Ohm64 and DNA

June 18, 2009

The Ohm64 ships with an all new version of DNA. This version has some enhancements for the Ohm64 mainly that DNA reads the MIDI map of the Ohm64 and adjust to it accordingly. That means that no matter what you have the 64 set to, it should work immediately upon startup. A lot of people have been asking why Union isn’t included with the 64 and there are a few reasons for that. First DNA is an evolution of our software. This is the latest and greatest that we have, and if you haven’t tried it out you should. The effects are awesome and it simplifies a lot of things for the majority of the users. It is a good companion when running audio software like Live or Reason letting you do audio and video from the same machine and controller. Here is a video showing the Ohm64 with DNA.

You will notice in this video that the Ohm64′s clip bank shows the status of the video that is playing, including a history mode. There are many other things that are possible as the Ohm64 is totally programmable and listens to simple MIDI messages. Since DNA is written in MAX, you can use MAX patches (see Peter’s blog posts on using Max patches in DNA).
