ohm64 and 64step

September 25, 2009

Pete made the mon+ohm application to allow monome apps to run on the Ohm64. The awesome monome community has a bunch of cool apps and this video show the 64Step Max/MSP patch running with the Ohm64. Here is my first attempt at running this app and is primarily for demonstration purposes, I didn’t spend too much time on the ‘performance’ of it, I’ll leave that up to you.

We love custom controllers

Let me say again we LOVE custom controllers. This one is the brain child of J Scott G.

Custom Ohm64 Bottom

Built to his specs, this original one of a kind OHM64 features a crazy toxic green dye job, his logo across the front and for the first time a black faceplate on a 64 that really makes that green pop. All the guys at the shop were really into this one. Fortunately for us, J Scott G just set up shop in Austin so we may get a chance to see this one again around town!

Monome+Ohm64 = mono+ohm

With this nifty app (or use as source Max/MSP patch), you can use applications designed for the monome controller with your Ohm64. LED commands from monome apps (currently supported: /led /row and /col) are intercepted and converted to sysex for the Ohm64, and MIDI from the Ohm64 is converted to OpenSoundControl and sent to the monome applications. This opens up a whole new world of creative possibilities – I hope you find each and every one!

Of course, this only uses the 64 button grid. The rest of the ohm’s controls can be used for other applications or sounds, or for extending the opensource monome apps. Kick ass!

Max/MSP users can of course pull apart the source. I’ve simplified some of the Ohm64 LED control patching so it no longer relies on Jitter (meaning it doesn’t rely on Quicktime!), so this currently stands as a better example of sysex LED control than the FMSynth or Editor source code. Those will soon get updated with the method used in this patch.

Brand Dealer

When we cut our controller bodies we start off with a long piece of wood and use our CNC machine to mill it into 4 bodies. We use almost the whole board, but we always have a little left over.

After a few years of  seeing these end scraps piling up, we decided to get some use out of them. Travis used our Metal Bot (metal milling machine) to make a large logo to brand the milled wood and turn them into dealer plaques. The plaques were finished a water based VOC free lacquer and sent off to our dealers. This is the extent to our marketing budget, we prefer to put those dollars into developing new products.  You can see these plaque at your local dealer (dealer locator can be found here).

OhmSampler – v01, a preliminary release.

September 10, 2009

A preliminary version is available if you can’t wait to get your hands on it.
OSX: http://lividserver.com/dl/ohm/OhmSampler_v01-OSX.zip
Windows: http://lividserver.com/dl/ohm/OhmSampler_v01-XP.zip
This comes in standalone, plugin, and source versions. I did this in Max/MSP 4.6 (the old one) so I can export it as a VST/RTAS/AU plugin, using their dying Pluggo technology.
Here’s a brief demo that tells you pretty much everything you need to know!

For Max/MSP users, it’s a good example of how to build a simple sampler in Max/MSP, as well how to use poly~, pattrstorage, build a pluggo plugin (even though it’s on it’s way out, it’s still useful), and standalone. What more could you hope to learn?
