I was working with clip slots, but my issue is that those mappings are static. Ideally, I would be working with clip slots- but then you are stuck with 64 buttons. You have to re-map it or stop everything then open a new live set, or do some sort of shenanagins to load a new sound set. That's fine when you're doing straight up songs, but I'm trying to have a seamless element in my performance. Clip play and navigation doesn't fit the bill in terms of Ohm64 functionality (until the Ohm gets official Ableton control surface drivers).

Side-gripe; the way that clips are setup via channels prevents you from simultaniously triggering samples that are in the same channel/instrument. But the Drum Rack is more of a straight up matrix.

This is why I've been tempted to get a Launchpad, because it has those proprietary hooks for Clip Navigation. Or maybe I should just re-think my setup...

Woah! I think you've actually gone a bit far with that. I'm not using m4l or Live 8, but might have a solution for you. Have you thought about using the clip slots and setting the triggers to 'toggle'? You'd still be able to play the 64 pads, but would get suitable MIDI feedback; I saw a chap called 'edison' do this. You should check out his techniques for sure.

Good luck!

Hi Peter. Not infront of my music machine right now but can clarify; all the settings you said are correct as I'm using the factory default settings for the Block. The channel is still set to zero.

Could it be because the Block USB channel name has ( ) brackets in?

travis, i would like a 32 button matrix with led video,

now that you have mentioned it :)

i am using arcade buttons (un original and cliche i know :P) so this would help me get leds working together with my buttons.

So, putting the MIDI Latch on top of the entire Drum Rack seems to achieve what I want. Except now
every note played will latch, no matter what. A little annoying, because I can't pick and choose which drum rack parts to latch and which ones not to. It works though, and I think I can find a way around it. I could build the latch to only loop certain notes, and have designated "latch parts" of the Drum Rack and the rest just be one shots. It's more m4l programming and it's not as flexible as I would like, but whatever. Close enough, right?

Sorry for the multiple posts.

Also, any further ideas about the setup are still welcome.

Ok. I'm back in the lab!

So, I'm not sure if you wanna brainstorm with me... but here's my situation.

I'm trying to use the Drum Racks in a DJ-like fashion. Use one half of the 64 button grid for the left side of the fader, and the other half for the right. You could have loops, samples, whatever for each 'track' that was loaded to either side.

My big issue was finding a sampler that loops via a toggle. Press once to start a sample, press again to stop it. I didn't find any samplers that did this, so I found a MIDI "note latch" device for m4l, and hacked it a bit to fit my needs. Now this way I can throw this note latch onto a sampler within the Drum Rack, trigger it with an Ohm64 button, let it loop, and then stop it with another button.

It worked more or less how I wanted, but I couldn't get the lights on the Ohm to work! ShortStraw, you came in and saved the day. But here's the new problem; the lights light up, but when I'm using my "note latch" the lights don't stay on. They only light up as long as you're actually pressing the button. What I would like to see is a button staying lit for as long as the loop is playing, not just flashing when I turn it on and then flashing again when I turn it off.

I tried playing with the MIDI routings some more, making a MIDI track that fed into the Ohm and received from my Drum Rack. The idea there was that the note was being held down, so the MIDI messages just had to go from the Drum Rack to the Ohm. Again, same problem. I'm not sure exactly how it couldn't work, seeing as this m4l device is virtually "holding down" the button for me, and that should keep the light on for as long as it's playing.

It functions fine as a looper, but the buttons don't stay lit even though the note is still being held down. Perhaps it's the way my m4l device is built? Perhaps I'm wiring things wrong in the MIDI routings...

I'm attaching the m4l device I'm working with. The original version can be found here: http://www.maxforlive.com/library/device.php?id=109#742

Gonna work on this a bit more and post back here if I've made any progress. Any help and/or ideas are appreciated!

---edit----
Couldn't upload my m4l device, sorry. Thought it'd be a small enough zip. Not sure what happened. Either way, the original device found at the URL worked fine for me. See my next post for a followup.

If possible, attach the User Configuration script as a text file, not a screen shot. All I can see is the Drum pad assignments.
Is the UserConfiguration.txt file here:
/Users/<your user name>/Library/Preferences/Ableton/Live 7/User Remote Scripts/block/UserConfiguration.txt
?
Is the [Device Controls] section as follows:

Encoder1: 3
Encoder2: 2
Encoder3: 1
Encoder4: 0
Encoder5: 5
Encoder6: 4
Encoder7: 6
Encoder8: 7

? (assuming you have the factory default assignments on the block)
Is the channel set correctly? In this section in the .txt file:

[Globals]
# The channel that the controller should send on
GlobalChannel: 0

It should be set to 0 if you are sending on channel 1. Yes, it's weird like that!

OK, will try to do it without pictures!

1) Create two MIDI tracks.
2) On the second track, select the MIDI input (MIDI from...) as the first track
3) On the second track, select the MIDI output (MIDI to...) as the Block/Ohm
4) Set 'Monitor' to 'On' on the second MIDI track (it'll go orange).
5) Record enable the first track and hit some Ohm pads. You should see the MIDI monitor of the second track jump around and the lights on the Ohm working.

Done it?

Hi! Can anyone help me set up the Block as a control surface in Live 7? I've input the controls I want to use in the userconfig text file and Live can see it, however it doesn't want to work as a surface (no 'Blue Hand' appear in the racks).

I have tried every variation of name for the Block in the input (as it appears in Live) but it just doesn't want to be picked up. All I want is the 8 rotaries to control the rack macro knobs and 16 note pads to work the visable pads on the drumrack.

Can anyone help? Thanks!

The only way to achieve this, AFAIK, is to set up a second MIDI track in Live and route the MIDI output of your drumrack channel through it to the Block. I am playing with the very same thing right now! The drumrack doesn't send the same MIDI I/O as clip triggering as it would appear.

What is cool, is that you can control your drumrack with part of the grid, and trigger clips with the rest!

The Brain is limited to 64 buttons and 48 LED's on a basic matrix. This is not that we did not want a full 64 LED's but there are just not enough pins to go around. It is maxed out for users to easily configure. For the block and Ohm we use some specialized firmware that will not work in the configurable Brain. The midi boards for the Block and Ohm64 are locked to those exact number of components.
We could do a video tutorial for a 64 button controller but it would only have 48 LED's and be kinda strange.
Thoughts?

What you could do is make 2 midi mappings in the Editor and change them on the fly. You could set 1 MIDI channel for DNA and another for Traktor. You would have to have the Editor running in the background to send the preset, but it shouldn't be an issue. You can find more on that here http://wiki.lividinstruments.com/wiki/Ohm64_Editor#Presets

yes. The ohm64 and block do not use adapters as they are bus powered.

Hi

I have been using Traktor DJ software for quite some time with a dedicated MIDI controller, but now I am getting into VJing as well, and I'm interested on the Ohm64/Cell DNA combo.

Given that I will be mostly DJing and VJing at the same time (a one man band), I am wondering how easy it would be to use the Ohm64 to control both Traktor and Cell DNA running at the same time. Is there a switch/button for instance for toggling between different modes on the Ohm64, so that at the press of such a button I could control one software or the other?

Thanks

Nick

from my understanding piezos are a way to do velocity, but our buttons don't support velocity, they are only switches.

The piezo's are wired to a little PCB with a resistor and diode for each piezo so they don't blow the Arduino out.

The LividSampler, monomeBridge and BlockEditor all crashed on startup after 1-3 seconds. I e-mailed you the crashreports and hope the problem reveal itself in those. A workaround that seems to work is to open the standalone .app application via the context menu and run the .mxf in MaxMSP Runtime. And all of Livids applications works without any problem on my armada of older Mac's and PC's. UPS failed to deliver my Livid Block today and my day off become meaningless. Any help or related experience appreciated, John.

That I know. As a last attempt to get the monomeBridge and BlockEditor to run on my system when they failed to open via the standalone .app application I tried open them in a different way as described before. And it seems to work. I hopefully get my Livid Block today and we will see. Another workaround that seems to work is to open the standalone .app application via the context menu and run the .mxf in MaxMSP Runtime. Thats why I suspect an incompability between my new Mac system and the standalone .app packaging itself. It looks like there is no problem with the content of the applications.
Any help appreciated, John.
