Once programmed:
Can I use a wallwart to power DIY board via USB for times when there's no computer in the setup?
I don't see any specs or info on the MIDI connectors. Are they both MIDI outs?

Good question. Currently it does need to be connected to the computer to generate MIDI. The connectors are MIDI in and out. The jack next to the USB port is MIDI OUT, and the other is MIDI IN.
Hmm. Can you tell me what the function of the MIDI in is? Or does this act as a general MIDI interface as well?
I'm not sure I follow the logic of having MIDI in and out IF it need to be connected via USB anyway, unless it's meant to be a MIDI interface as well, which seems a bit unneeded.
If it could work without a computer, then MIDI out makes sense.
Yeah this can act as a MIDI interface. You can connect other gear as well as send to gear. In regards to the USB power, yes it is needed.,MIDI will not operate until the USB host activates USB-MIDI functionality so you need to run some kind of MIDI software.
You will notice there is an unpopulated space for a power jack next to the USB jack, this is for future expansion as eventually standalone DC power will be integrated. We could have simply left off the MIDI IN and OUT until that is integrated, but we figured it would be useful.
Thanks.
How about the header labeled "program".
What's that?
Good question. That is to connect a programmer. This would be used to reprogram the micro controller or update the firmware. You would need one of these to program http://www.alliedelec.com/search/productdetail.aspx?SKU=3830258
ok thanks.
If you guys do a new board revision, might be nice to silkscreen labels for the midi in/out. I used a Sharpie.
