Livid Code and Korg iMS20 iPad app

Livid Code controlling the Korg iMS-20 iPad app with MIDII recently went through the documentation for the Korg iMS20 iPad app to find out how to control it with the Code. While Korg’s MIDI implementation is not totally comprehensive, it’s still pretty useful. I created a map you can use for the Code to control the main Synth screen. The zip also includes a graphic that most of the possible controls if you want to try controlling other parts of the app (like the mixer and effects) with your Code (or other MIDI controller). This video scratches the surface of possibility with this type of combination, and I look forward to exploiting this even more!

I have an octave of a C-major scale on the bottom, with the Code’s knobs closely approximating the screen layout. One exception is that the Modulation generator is moved to the top left of the Code. If you want to use the map, then download the zip, unzip it, attach your code to your computer, open the Code Editor, and select “Open” from the file menu, then find the “Korg-iMS20_layout.lmd” file from the zip. Press “send” then “save to Code,” then detach and hook up to the iPad with the Camera Connection Kit and a powered USB hub. Oh, and ENJOY!

PS – for those who landed here searching for the iMS20 MIDI spec, here’s the graphic:

ControllerDIY Beta Testing

January 8, 2010

Soon we will begin public beta testing on our ControllerDIY board. The direct wiring to the board testing seems to be working as expected. You can wire 64 analog controls, 16 buttons, and 14 LED’s right to the board (ribbon cable method preferred). This is a class compliant MIDI device, USB powered with MIDI in and out jacks. For a demo I wired a slide potentiometer to the board. I tried to make it short, but I wanted to explain a few things in the intro, skip to 2:47 where the wiring demo begins if you want to get right to the point.

Arkaos and Block

October 20, 2009

It is good to see other VJ software following the same path as the audio world. As you saw in my intro video the block controller works out of the box with Ableton Live, it sends and receives MIDI and so does the block so the lights react to clip status. Our DNA software does the same thing so it can work with our controllers right out of the box, no need for setup or configuration. Now in the latest beta Arkaos Grand VJ add MIDI output and after never using it I was able to make a quick demo to show you how easy it is. They also have OSC support, which is really nice to see. This works the same on the Ohm64 and Block as shown in the video below.

Recycle Program controllers are rolling in

August 26, 2009

We recently launched our Ohm recycle program. It is a bit unheard of in the music products business to upgrade past units to the latest model’s features. We figured “hey what the heck”. We realize our users appreciate our controllers as not being disposable so we figured they should not be left out of the fun!

After a couple weeks of getting conversion parts fabricated by our shop robots (commanded by humans). We just started receiving Ohm classic controllers and recycling the bodies to accept the new Ohm64 controls. It requires a custom faceplate and that has the outline of the classic faceplate but the inside cutouts of the Ohm64 controls. We also do away with the classic midiboard and back panel board and replace it with our new talk back enabled MidiUSB all in one board.
Here are before and after pics of a super sweet Red ohm Classic owned by user Diego Medina that that we just recycled.
The recycle program is extra rewarding for me. It is like a reunion with my babies after they left the nest. It is nice to spend some time with them and see how they are holding up in the harsh world.
