Livid Ohm for PoisonAs a build up to something we are announcing next week, we’re going to be revisiting a bunch of our custom controller work that we’ve done over the years. Since we have close contact with our customers, we very often get into conversations about “what would be cool,” and sometimes we’ll get people asking us to do finishes or layouts that we never would release on our own.
Case in point: the “Poison” controller that we did for Poison’s 08 tour for their lighting and video guy. He wanted to put the poison logo and toxic green color on the Ohm Classic and call it “his.” Since the inspiration for our wood bodies is the electric guitar, it only made sense that a classic metal band would be one of the first customers to jump on making his MIDI controller “more rocking.” We have been working for years trying to forge our own style, and it’s great when we find out that we are as appealing to long-time rockers as we are to the latest DJs!
Travis did a post-op article about the challenges and approach he took to this job, which involved making the logo durable for the road, and getting the shocking color just right.
Jay managed to score an interview with Mark “Fifi” Taylor, who shared his history as a VJ, lighting designer, and career rock and roll touring maniac.
Check out these articles and pictures to get some insight in what it takes to make our controllers!

Livid Sampler update and monome bridge fix

November 10, 2009

Once again, the short-sighted naming of apps strikes again! OhmSampler is now LividSampler, and works with Ohm64 and block. I’ve fixed some quirks about saving the setups, and samples play for the duration of the button press (rather than the duration of the selection). It’s damn fun to drop a bunch of weird sounds and just start messing around. I highly encourage such activity!
Also, In my effort to get the monomeBridge working for the block, I released it broken for the Ohm64 . Oops. It’s fixed now.
As always, the download links are here:

mon+ohm v002…er…make that 003

mon+ohm iconThis adds a fix to limit the amount of data that gets sent to the ohm, which was causing freezes on some computers. Update now!
It is also worth noting that if you are using Max5 Runtime to run monome apps, you can just use the .mxf file in runtime, rather than running the mon+ohm application. Not really a big deal, but it might make windows XP operation easier. You can find the .mxf in the same folder as the .exe in windows. On mac, ctl-click on the mon+ohm.app icon, and “Show Package Contents” – you’ll find it in there.
UPDATE: v003  adds MIDI thru to pass the Ohm64′s MIDI onto another MIDI port, such as a MIDIYoke port, IAC port, or even an external device.

Announcing the Livid Instruments Ohm Classic Recycling Program

July 9, 2009

ohm64recycle_01web

In an effort to cut down on waste, reuse expensive components, and fight the growing disposability of consumer goods, we are pleased to announce the Ohm recycle program. Current owners of the Ohm Classic (a.k.a Ohm36) can send their Ohm control surfaces in to be converted into Ohm64 Models for $349.

Our Ohm recycle program allows us to reuse the wood, fader and rotary knobs, crossfaders, rotary pots, ribbon cables, and fasteners in your Ohm, and repurpose them into an entirely new Ohm64 control surface. Your good-as-new Ohm64 will have a new aluminum faceplate, internal circuitry, backplate, and rubber button pads. The recycled controller will have all of the features of a brand new Ohm, but will reduce environmental impact and cost less then a brand new Ohm64.

While we do source our wood from mostly renewable forests, our wood bodies are hand crafted and do take a long time from being planted to becoming a controller. Our recycle program makes us feel better about reusing the wood bodies, and saves on waste and natural resources that would go into making a whole new body. Steel from the old faceplates are also recycled and will most likely eventually end up taking form as another consumer based good.

To ensure the fastest turnaround, we will be scheduling recyclings in limited runs. Our first run will start on July 23rd, and be completed in one week. In order to reduce any downtime you may have by not having your controller for a week we ask that you receive your Classic Ohm by the 27th so we can have it refitted and sent back to you in a timely manner. Ohm Classic owners that participate in this program also receive a free copy of Cell DNA that is customized for the Ohm64 controller.

To participate in the Ohm recycling program and reserve a spot in the first run, please contact us by sending a mail to contact(at)lividinstruments(dot)com

The Ohm recycle program is currently only offered on the wood models, a metal recycle program will be announced when we release the all metal version of the Ohm64.
